چکیده

In the course of the past three years, two antibiotic agents named streptothricin (Waksman and Woodruff, 1942) and streptomycin (Schatz, Bugie, and Waksman, 1944) have been isolated and shown to be active against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria in vitro. Additional studies (Robinson, .Graessle, and Smith, 1944; Jones, Metzger, Schatz, and Waksman, 1944; Robinson, Smith, and Graessle, 1944) showed both drugs to be active in vivo as well as in vitro. The fact that both streptomycin and streptothricin are water-soluble, stable preparations which are not readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration (Robinson, Stebbins, and Graessle, unpublished) suggests that these antibiotic agents might be of value in bacillary dysentery and other infections associated with the gastrointestinal tract. In the present investigation, an attempt was made to determine the effect of streptomycin and streptothricin in enteric infections by measuring the effect of these agents on the intestinal flora of mice.

Use of sulfasuxidine, streptothricin, and streptomycin in nutritional studies with the chick.

Sulfonamides are known to alter the intestinal flora of animals, with a consequent change in the synthesis of certain vitamins by the intestinal bacteria (l-5). This altered synthesis may in turn lead to an increased dietary vitamin requirement for some animals or invoke new requirements in others. For example, the inclusion of 1 per cent of sulfasuxidine in the diet of chicks increases their f...

Effects of Lactobacillus casei probiotics on growth performance, blood parameters and intestinal microbial flora in juvenile goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Lactobacillus casei probiotic is one of the probiotics used in aquaculture industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Lactobacillus casei probiotic on the growth performance, blood parameters, and intestinal microbial flora in goldfish (Carassius auratus) for 60 days. In this study, 180 fish with an average weight of 10.11± 0.16 g were randomly distributed into two treatments...

Role of anaerobic flora in the translocation of aerobic and facultatively anaerobic intestinal bacteria.

It is thought that the normal enteric microflora acts not only to prevent intestinal colonization but also to prevent subsequent systemic dissemination of ingested, potentially pathogenic bacteria. To determine the relative roles of specific components of the intestinal bacterial flora in bacterial translocation out of the gut, mice were given various antimicrobial agents to selectively elimina...

Effects of Lactococcus lactis and Weissella cibaria as probiotic on growth performance, intestinal bacterial flora, digestive enzymes and intestinal histology in common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of Lactococcus lactis and Weissella cibaria probiotics on growth performance, intestinal bacterial flora, digestive enzymes and intestinal histology in common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Fish with an average initial weight of 17 g were divided into 10 treatments with 3 replications. Fish food in treatments 1, 2 and 3 were supplemented with ...

Experimental Enteric Shigella and Vibrio Infections in Mice and Guinea Pigs

A method has been devised for inhibiting the normal enteric flora, permitting long term asymptomatic enteric infections of mice and guinea pigs with streptomycin-resistant strains of Shigella flexneri or Vibrio cholerae. Introduction of a streptomycin-resistant strain of E. coli into the intestinal tract of experimental animals resulted in a rapid elimination of the enteric pathogens studied. N...
